Unused protocols
To make your email account even more secure, we allow you to disable unused protocols.
So, for example, if you exclusively use our app and webmail service, you can simply deactivate the classic
email protocols POP3, IMAP and SMTP by removing the corresponding check marks in the webmail service under Settings
‘Account / Customer data / Protocol status’.
mail.co.uk offers the following protocols:
-
IMAP:
This protocol is used by email clients such as Outlook, Thunderbird and Apple Mail to read emails and
manage your mailbox folders.
-
POP3:
An older protocol for retrieving and reading emails in your inbox, but it does not support any other folders.
-
SMTP:
Your respective client (Outlook, Thunderbird, etc.) uses this protocol to send the emails you have written.
-
CalDAV:
A protocol for retrieving and editing appointments in your online calendar.
-
CardDAV:
This protocol allows you to manage the contacts in your online address book.
-
WebDAV:
You can use this protocol to save files to your online storage or download them from there.
-
MobileApps (iOS, Android):
Our Android and iOS apps communicate via this protocol.
However, none of these protocols are necessary if you use the mail.co.uk webmail service directly in your browser.
And since the listed protocols cannot yet be secured with a second factor (2FA),
it is recommended that most users simply disable these protocols.
You can find more detailed instructions on the help page for protocol status.
